A Quick Refresher

Why three powders, not just one.

Air polishing powders aren’t interchangeable — each one is engineered for a different clinical situation. Here’s the short version of what most of the literature spends 40 pages explaining.

The Heavy Hitter

Sodium Bicarbonate

The traditional prophy abrasive. Its larger 65µm particle hits hard, which is exactly what you want when a patient walks in with severe tobacco staining or baked-on coffee residue.

Reach for it when

Avoid for: implants, exposed root surfaces, composites, or any subgingival pocket work.

The Gentle Alternative

Glycine

A water-soluble amino acid. Significantly softer than sodium bicarbonate, which makes it safe to use beneath the gumline and around implants where bicarbonate would cause damage.

Reach for it when

Limitation: won't shift heavy calcified or baked-on stain — pair with Sodium Bicarbonate for those.

The Modern Standard

Erythritol

A sugar alcohol with an ultra-fine 14µm particle. The current go-to in Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocols because it handles the majority of routine prophy comfortably — and it’s mildly antibacterial as a bonus.

Reach for it when

Bonus: mildly anti-cariogenic — actively inhibits growth of certain oral pathogens.

Which powder do I actually need?

Most multi-chair clinics keep all three on the shelf — they serve different cases. Sodium Bicarbonate (260g) for adult patients with heavy supragingival stain (tobacco, coffee, wine). Glycine (160g) for paediatric patients, periodontal maintenance, implant patients, and subgingival pocket biofilm. Erythritol (160g) for routine recall prophylaxis, orthodontic patients, and the gentlest full-mouth treatment safely covering both supra- and subgingival use. If you can only start with one, Erythritol covers the majority of routine appointments comfortably — and works as the basis of Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocols.

The manufacturer offers larger bottles, but in clinical practice the 160g size delivers approximately 20 patient sessions — which matches the shelf life and typical usage rate for these powders before they should be rotated. Larger bottles tend to sit open longer than is ideal. The 260g Sodium Bicarbonate, by contrast, holds longer because it’s used more aggressively in heavy-stain cases. We carry the sizes that match real-world clinical use.

Yes. Air polishing systems across the major brands — EMS Air-Flow, NSK Prophy-Mate, KaVo PROPHYflex, W&H Proxeo Aura, Dentsply Sirona AIR-N-GO, Acteon — all run on universal-spec prophylaxis powders. Our formulations meet that spec, so they drop straight in. Many clinics buy our powders specifically as a cost-effective consumable for the major-brand polishing units they already own.

Single bottles are $35 each (ex GST). Order 10 bottles for a 2.5% volume discount ($341.25 total / $34.13 per bottle), or 20+ bottles for a 5% volume discount ($665 for 20 / $33.25 per bottle). You can mix any combination of the three powders within a bundle to match your case profile — e.g. 6× Erythritol + 3× Glycine + 1× Sodium Bicarbonate inside a 10-bottle order. Volume discounts are applied automatically at checkout once the quantity threshold is met.

Sealed bottles have a multi-year shelf life when stored in a cool, dry environment. Once opened, we recommend completing the bottle within 3 months for the finest powders (Erythritol, Glycine) and within 6 months for Sodium Bicarbonate, to maintain consistent particle flow through the polishing nozzle. Our 160g sizing is calibrated specifically to these windows.
